What is the Phillis Wheatley Association (PWA)?


The PWA is the organization Jane Edna Hunter originally founded in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Working Girls Home Association in 1911.

Its mission was to provide residential, occupational, and cultural opportunities for unmarried African American working women. Under the leadership of its president Jacquelyn Bradshaw, the PWA continues to serve the
Central area by offering the following services:

     - dance and music lessons at the Sutphen School of Music
     - child care and after school programs at the Josephine Kohler Day Care
        Center
     - summer camp for children at Camp Mueller
     - affordable housing for low-income senior citizens
     - cafeteria-style meals in the refurbished dining room
     - social activities and special events for the community

The PWA is presently located at 4450 Cedar Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103.
