The Jane Edna Hunter Project

A Correction

In the summer of 2008, Dr. Thomas embarked on a solo archival research trip to Cleveland, Ohio. When she paid a visit to the Phillis Wheatley Association, she also toured Hunter's Cove, the former home of Jane Edna Hunter. While there, Dr. Thomas conducted a preliminary examination of the numerous boxes of business and personal correspondence. She also took a number of digital photographs of the house's interior and its decor, many of which can be seen throughout this website.

One of those photos appears
below on the right. The caretaker at Hunter's Cove identified the woman in the portrait as Jane Edna Hunter. He was mistaken. The true subject of the original photograph is Ethel S. Storey, who served as executive director of the PWA from 1948 to 1961. Unfortunately, we did not realize the error until we had already used the image in various slide and print formats.

In the interest of preventing any further confusion, we have removed the erroneous image (seen below on the right) from each of the documents in which it appeared. We have replaced it in all instances with the image of Jane Edna Hunter seen below on the left.

We regret the error and any inconvenience it may have caused.
